EGVI 10th anniversary

EGVI has greatly contributed to the promotion of decarbonisation of the transport system, electrification, and improvement of ICEs but, to reach our common targets - reduction of CO2 emissions and improvement of air quality, we need to put more emphasis on research for the benefit of the society. Discover what Zissis Samaras, director of LAT AUTh has to say.

joint workshop DTT results prof Z Samaras

The Joint workshop of the three nanoparticle research EU projects DOWNTOTENPEMS4NANO and SUREAL-23 took place in 9 & 10 October 2018 in Thessaloniki.

In addition to the three projects, coordinating the event, partners from EU projects on advanced engine development including DiePEr, EAGLE, PAREGEN, THOMSON and UPGRADE presented their recent findings in the respective area. Representatives from EU institutions (DG Research, INEA, EGVIA, EUCAR), as well as US and Japan, also participated.

You can download the presentations and posters here

DownToTen (www.downtoten.com) is a H2020 project aiming at characterising nanoparticle emissions from vehicles. The focus is on particles below 23 nm, a range which is currently not controlled by existing regulations within the EU. This video explains tha approach and the results of the project.

ZORAN Ristovski Invitation

Speaker: Prof. Zoran Ristovski, Qeensland University of Technology, Brisbane

Abstract:     Prior to widespread introduction of the biofuels into the transport sector a thorough knowledge of its impact on engine performance and emission will be critical to avoid consumer rejection. While a considerable research has been conducted describing the impact of different transesterified biodiesel fuel types on regulated emissions (i.e., PM, NOx, CO, and HCs) limited information is available addressing the impact of these fuel types on other particle properties that are more specific and relevant for their health effects.

This presentation will look into the influence of biodiesel fuel physical and chemical properties on nanoparticle emissions, their toxicity as well as the ability of biodiesel emissions to contribute to the generation of secondary organic aerosols.

Speaker Biography:  Professor Ristovski is an atmospheric scientist with almost 20 years of experience in the general area of airborne particle pollution working at  Queensland University of Technology. His main areas of interest are in the characterisation of vehicle emission related nanoparticles, their physical and chemical properties, transport in the atmosphere as well as their toxicity. He has conducted a number of projects in this area both for the Australian government as well as private industry. He has extensively published in the area with over 120 journal publications that have attracted over to 2000 citations (h-index of 29). He is a recipient of a number of grants both from the Australian government and industry (over $6 million in total). His research group, currently consisting of 2 postdoctoral fellows and 9 postgraduate students, is a well-established and internationally recognized research group.  Prof. Ristovski was one of the key academics in establishing the Biofuels Engine Research Facility (BERF). He is currently involved in several projects looking at various issues in relation to the utilisation of biofuels.

Speaker : Dr Matti Maricq,  Technical leader  at Ford Motor Co.

Matti Maricq is a Technical Leader in the Chemical Engineering & Emissions Aftertreatment Department at Ford's Research and Innovation Center. He currently heads the Vehicle Emissions Research Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. in physical Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. depletion, whereupon he established a research program to investigate the atmospheric chemistry of CFC replacements. In the 1990's concerns began to surface regarding potential adverse health associations with increases in ambient particulate matter (PM) levels. During this time Matti shifted his research efforts to the investigation of PM emissions from motor vehicles. He has been active in this area for the past 15 years. His research interests include the aerosol physics behind PM emissions and measurement, soot formation in flames and engines, characterization of combustion PM, and the development of better PM sampling and measurement methodologies. Besides his work at Ford, Dr. Maricq is active in the Coordinating Research Council, the American Association for Aerosol Research, the American Chemical Society, and the Society of Automotive Engineers
