Digital models provide much higher precision in terms of measurements. We can use that to further improve the experiments and to better understand the process.
Ananias Tomboulides studied Mechanical Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He obtained his diploma in 1987 and continued to earn his Master’s and then doctorate degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in the USA, in 1993. After spending two years at the Fluid Dynamics Research Center at Princeton University, he became a Research Scientist at the Combustion Technology Laboratory of the Institute for Energy Technology of ETHZ in 1994. In 1997 he joined the department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering of Boston University as an Assistant Professor. In 2000 he returned to the Institute of Energy Technology of ETHZ and in September 2002 he became a Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, in the Department of Engineering and Management of Energy Resources, which is now a Department of Mechanical Engineering and is part of the University of Western Macedonia. Since the end of 2015 he is a Professor of the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Areas of Expertise: Prof. Tomboulides' research interests lie in energy and power generation and in particular in the numerical simulation of reactive and non-reactive flows with applications in combustion (DNS and LES) and other fluid/thermal problems. In particular, he has expertise in large-scale computing on parallel processing systems and his group is in close collaboration with Argonne National Laboratories (USA) as well as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland).
Prof. Tomboulides is currently the Chairman of ERCOFTAC, the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, since October 2012 and has acted as Deputy Chairman between 2010 and 2012. Since 2011, he holds the position of Chairman of the Board of EPA Thessaly, the Natural Gas Supply Company in the area of Thessaly. From 2010 - 2021 he was a member of the Board of the Greek NARIC (DOATAP) as a representative of Engineering Schools. He is also the Secretary of the Greek Section of the Combustion Institute. From 2006-2012 he was the Coordinator of ERCOFTAC’s Special Interest Group 28 (SIG28) on Reactive Flows. He is also active within EARPA’s (the European Automotive Research Partners Association) Modelling and Simulation Task Force.
He is the author or co-author of about 50 publications in peer reviewed journals and more than 50 conference papers; he has delivered more than 25 invited lectures. His research has been sponsored by a number of European, Greek, Swiss and US projects; he is also the recipient of an EU Marie-Curie International Reintegration Award for his research activity on the DNS and LES of combustion phenomena. He is member of the Editorial Board of joirnal Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (FTAC) as well as member of the Editorial Board (as Αssociate Editor) of Simulation and Modelling Practice and Theory (SIMPAT). He has been the organizer or co-organizer of international Conferences, workshops and Summer Schools.
